TO MARKET TO MARKET

General Collective is Auckland’s creative community’s favourite market, bringing makers, designers and artists together for one day in one artsy hub. Every market is an exciting curated showcase of unique homewares, jewellery, fashion, skincare, handmade toys, linen, furniture, ceramics, artisan food and street food. Founder, Rose Barbarich, hand selects the vendors to ensure only the highest quality handmade or locally design focused products are included. Rose talks with us about design, creativity and collaboration.

WHY DID YOU START GENERAL COLLECTIVE?
General Collective was started in 2014 for a good friend and I to sell our homemade products! The aim was to create a market for local makers and small businesses that was unlike any other in New Zealand.

YOU’RE A DESIGNER YOURSELF, WHAT DO YOU MAKE?
General Collective is full time for me and now my creative focus and outlet. I have moved from making my own designs and selling them, to creating ways both online and through my markets for other designers and creatives to sell their products and reach buyers for their designs.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
The creative and genuinely committed people I meet through General Collective. Being able to showcase beautiful products and new brands to a keen audience wanting to support local also really inspires me.

WHAT CREATIVE TRENDS ARE COMING THROUGH AT THE MOMENT?
Delicious rich tones, colour and natural materials made locally. Earthy ceramics. Lovely leather goods; wallets, purses and cases! Minimalist art and colour pop, both contrasting and equally beautiful. Nothing beats locally designed, unique handcrafted goods and knowing the face and story behind your favourite brands.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BRINGING ALL THESE CREATIVE MINDS TOGETHER UNDER ONE ROOF?
The energy created through so many creatives in one space. The excitement and vibe they bring. I love seeing and hearing so many wonderful friendships that have started through meeting at General Collective, and everyone helping and supporting each other to success. It’s also extremely satisfying seeing customers embrace the quality and products on offer and experience so many local brands.

WHAT ARE YOUR THREE MOST TREASURED HANDMADE ITEMS?
Oooh tricky! I literally walk and talk General Collective, genuinely loving, using and wearing so many of our makers’ products. My Claybird sand vase, which I use for utensils on the kitchen bench. Many favourite outfits from Ribbon on a Bombshell, incredible clothes made locally and also my lovey Leden garden artwork taking pride of place in my lounge.

HOW DO YOU TAKE TIME OUT IN THE DAY?
Most of the time it's go go go for me… except for dinnertime when I sit down with my kids every night, talk through the day and enjoy our meal together. We also try and get as much time outside in the park and on the beaches with family.

IS TEA A DAILY RITUAL FOR YOU?
Recently I’ve really started to enjoy tea and love trying different blends. I’ve found it’s a great healthy and energising alternative to caffeine. I’m looking forward to sharing a pot of tea with friends brewed in my new four cup Storm & India teapot!
